If you feel like Easter gets a little more expensive every year, you aren’t alone. New data from the National Retail Federation shows that consumer spending on Easter is expected to hit a record high of $24.9 billion this year.

Food is one of the largest contributors to that ballooning budget, accounting for $7.5 billion of total spend.

“There’s a bit of pain now associated with Easter because of higher prices,” Old Dominion University chair of the Department of Economics Bob McNab, told 13NewsNow. “If you’re looking to buy the same things this year as last year, it’s going to cost more.”

But cooking a big Easter brunch or lunch doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Dollar General recently expanded its grocery lineup, and its prices are just as competitive as Aldi or Walmart.

Even better, Dollar General is open on Easter Sunday, making it easy to pick up all of those last-minute ingredients.

Dollar General is becoming a grocery destination

Over the last few years, Dollar General has made a major effort to grow its grocery program.

In 2023, the company said that it “now offers a meaningful selection of fresh fruits and vegetables in more locations than any other mass retailer or grocer in the United States.” Dollar General has made a particularly concerted effort to open locations in rural and underserved areas of the U.S., helping eliminate the number of food deserts in the country.

In addition to pantry staples, 7,000 stores offer fresh produce, meat, and dairy products, meaning it’s now possible to make a full grocery run at the discount chain.

In March, Dollar General announced it would be bringing on a new CEO, JJ Fleeman, in 2027. Fleeman was formerly a top executive at Ahold Delhaize, the parent company of several large supermarket chains.

Given Fleeman’s experience, the move seems to signal Dollar General’s intent to expand even more into grocery segments over the coming years.
