While the chicken category of the fast-food market rose by 5.3% in 2025, this sector has been seeing significant cooling following the “fried chicken wars” of the early 2020s and high competition in a space in which individual restaurants can innovate only so much before straying from what brought customers in.

The latest chain specializing in chicken wings reported to no longer have a single operating location is BreWingZ Sports Bar & Grill.

Opened in the Houston area in 2013, the restaurant specializing in large platters of traditional and boneless wings in different flavors had a peak of 22 locations a few years ago. By 2026, that number had whittled down to six as the chain started closing underperforming stores.

Rumors that many of the remaining locations had stopped operating have started circulating on social media earlier this month. As is now being reported by The Houston Chronicle, all of the remaining six locations now go to disconnected phone lines when customers attempt to call them.

One of the BreWingZ Sports Bar & Grill restaurants on Uvalde Road is reported to have had a lockout notice pasted to its front window over unpaid rent.

The chain’s Facebook and Instagram accounts have been inactive since Sept. 20, and the restaurant has not been responding to media requests for comment on its situation. The Houston Chronicle also reported that the sales permit from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is also now listed as inactive for all but two of the locations.

While  BreWingZ had a fair share of critics over wing taste and quality, it also developed a loyal fan base over the years who saw it as the neighborhood place to watch sports games and grab some wings.

“I used to go to the one on Silver all the time on Saturday nights to watch the UFC fights, went once and they no longer air the fights and the bar side was completely empty,” Houston resident Alexander wrote on Instagram under one of the posts about the chain’s shutdown.

What is happening with BreWingZ Sports Bar & Grill in 2026

As a private company owned by investment firm GPC Investments, BreWingZ Sports Bar & Grill is not obligated to publicize its quarterly earnings. Without a public statement, it is not immediately clear what type of financial situation led to the abrupt store closures.

Earlier in October, a Florida judge approved a plan for major Popeyes franchisee Sailormen Inc. to exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy that it filed for in January 2026.

As part of its efforts to restructure more than $129 million in debt accrued from underperforming Popeyes locations, the company closed 39 stores across Florida and Georgia while selling 97 others through a court-supervised process throughout this year. Both Popeyes and several other creditors agreed to absorb losses in order to get Sailormen out of bankruptcy.

Sailormen’s legal representatives had previously cited “the national impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on restaurant operations, consumer choice, [and] high inflation” as the reason behind multiple fried chicken stores’ poor financial performance.
